On June 2, 2021, workers act to protect themselves from a chemical vapor exposure at the museum.

WWU sends a letter to management demanding workers be immediately removed from affected areas and full transparency of the situation. After pressure from WWU, management closes museum for 3 weeks over safety hazards. 

The need for a union becomes more urgent, which prompts WWU and AFSCME Council 67 to send another letter to Walters' leadership requesting a meeting to discuss a fair and speedy inclusive union election.
